Who Is Taking Care of You?

My name is Nansie. I'm a sister, counselor, and lifelong caregiver advocate. More than 40 years ago, my brother survived a traumatic brain injury. In the years that followed, I experienced firsthand heartbreak, progress and setbacks. I gained the courage and resilience it takes to care for someone you love while trying not to lose myself in the process.

Learn and Remember the CARE Method

C – COMPASSION

is a social feeling that motivates people to go out of their way to relieve the physical, mental, or emotional pains of others and oneself. Take care of yourself first. If you are depleted or exhausted you won't have the energy to help someone else.

  • Calm your mind with breathing techniques, mediation, naps.
  • Create a routine that includes exercise, meditation, any project that brings you happiness and piece of mind.

A – ACCEPTANCE

you can't control situations or people in your life. You can only control how you respond. Stop trying to change what you cannot change. Accept what is.

  • Appreciate the gifts you have been given. Shift your focus from what is not working to what is working. Gratitude is powerful.
  • Acknowledge how important you are to those you are supporting. You are the light in someone else's darkness. Stay in the light. Don't be pulled into the darkness of pain and suffering.

R – RESILIENCE

is the ability to bounce back, to cope to handle stress. It is your ability to recover, adapt, and keep going. It is your inner strength in action. You can do this.

  • Rejuvenate, take a nap, a walk, meditate. Using breathing exercises. Take breaks.
  • Remember the fun times. What makes you happy. What brings you joy. Remember you are unique, and special.

E – EMPOWER

You are stronger than you think. Recognize your power and step into it.

  • Embrace each day as a gift. You are here to love and learn. Gratitude is healing. Focus on what gifts you have been given and appreciate the beauty around you.
  • Establish a daily routine, that includes time for yourself and what you love. Explore new ways to find enjoyment. Educate yourself. Focus your attention on joy. Release all fear and overload feelings and beliefs.
